• Funding the design, printing, and distribution of a waterproof “comic book” version of the Voluntary Standards for Marine Recreation in Mexico.  This approach offers an engaging and memorable way to help marine tourism operators follow good environmental practices.

Accomplishments like these directly benefit coral reef habitats by supporting and engaging the communities that depend on them. They are what make CORAL’s approach so unique—and they are also what make our approach so successful. But they can’t continue without your support.

:: ACHONDO
     
Si las Rías Baixas cuentan con innumerables pecios, sin duda, el Achondo lo situaremos entre las inmersiones más espectaculares que podamos realizar. Su excelente estado de conservación unido al ambiente que le confiere su situación geográfica y la ausencia de oleaje hacen que esta imersión sea una experiencia inolvidable.

Naufragio
Invierno del año 1986, cercanía de Monteferro en la bocana Sur de la Ría de Vigo. El fuerte oleaje unido al viento reinante hacen que el pesquero Achondo, con base en el Puerto Vasco de Ondarroa, se fuese a estrellar contra los bajos conocidos como La Negra. Inediatamene dieron todo atrás, navegando durante algún tiempo, pero terminando por hundirse en un fondo de unos 37 mts de profundidad.


Inmersión
En una zona de escasa visibilidad no impide que habitualmente podamos ver unos 15 o 16 mts. del pecio y en ocasiones sus 35 mts. de eslora. Iniciamos la inmersión en la mitad del casco a la altura del puente para dirigirnos por la borda de estribor hacia la proa. Su costado visible está tapizado de gorgonias, manos de muerto, entre otros. Una vez en la proa contemplamos el pescante y el alador continuando nuestro camino hacia su cubierta principal, donde observamos los restos de maniobra que todavía salen de su bodega de aparejos. A escasos metros hacia popa está su bodega de frío, en la que sólo los buceadores más experimentados pueden entrar por su única puerta de acceso. Si guiendo el camino hacia popa nos encontramos con el puente en el cual podemos leer lo que queda del nombre y debajo se puede apreciar el maquinillo. Continuando, y ya prácticamente llegados a la popa del barco vemos los portillos de la sala de máquinas y su entrada de popa, así como la chimenea. Ya es hora de ascender, por lo que regresamos por la banda de estribor para alcanzar el cabo.

Don't Be a Christmas Tree Diver

A certain kind of diver makes guides groan. This diver assembles his gear, and then reaches for his dive bag and breaks out the accessories. I watch in disbelief as he slides a mesh tank protector over the rental tank, and then proceeds to clip on to his buoyancy compensator large slates, a magnetic etch-a-sketch, dive tables, blinking tank strobe lights, a tank banger, low pressure hose noise maker, a shaker, a camera, a fish ID slate, a flash light, fancy octopus holder, a surface marker buoy without a reel to deploy it, mesh collecting bags (for trash?), and various types of extra clips and hose retractors "just in case". In the dive industry we call this kind of diver a "Christmas tree diver" (CTD) because he has so many doodads hanging off of him that he looks like a well-ornamented Christmas tree.
