Government Approval – The DOT specifications is a countries mark that the cylinder meets the countries specifications for cylinders. For us in the UK this should read EN144/BS, they should also have a CE stamp. Metal Type – This section notes the type of metal the cylinder is made from, for instance 3A stands for carbon steel. This marking is important for those testing the cylinder Working Pressure – An important mark, this indicates the cylinders maximum working pressure, this can sometimes be in bar or psi, in this instance the cylinder marking indicates the cylinder can hold 2250 psi. Serial Number – A unique serial number which all scuba cylinders carry, made up of lot number and size. Manufacturer Identification – This is usually after the serial number and indicated the manufacturer. Examples of manufacturers would be faber, luxfer and PST. Hydrostatic Test Date – This will show the last date that the cylinders hydrostatic test was done on. When its re-tested a stamp will be added to the cylinder indicating the last date.     WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following products. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Cressi Ellipse Black MC5 Regulator

Units: About 200

Distributor: Cressi-sub USA, of Westwood, N.J.

Hazard: Partial obstruction of the High Pressure (HP) port can produce an inaccurate reading on the pressure gauge, resulting in a slow descent of the needle in the pressure gauge. The inaccurate reading on the gauge poses a drowning hazard to divers.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received three reports of inaccurate pressure readings while the scuba regulators were in use. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves regulators used to control the flow of air while scuba diving, making it possible for divers to breathe under water. The recalled regulators have model name Ellipse Black MC5. “Cressi MC5” and “Cressi Black” are printed on the regulator.

Sold at: Authorized dive shops nationwide and on the Internet from March 2009 through August 2009 for between $280 and $309.

Manufactured in: Italy

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the regulators and return them to a Cressi authorized dive shop for a free repair. Consumers can also return the product to Cressi at One Charles Street, Westwood, N.J. 07675.

Asas Dive Rite : Recolhidas pelo fabricante com substituição gratis

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Dive Rite, has announced a voluntary recall of v. Partial obstruction of various Wings.

The over pressure valve springs in the diving equipment could rust and fail allowing the buoyancy compensator devices to leak, posing a drowning hazard to divers. No injuries have been reported.

Springs were used on wings that have an opaque white or blue tinted bladder and welded in flanges. Wings with a black bladder are not affected. Only the Dive Rite wings that have a serial number range from 42000 through 72000 are affected by this recall. The serial numbers can be found on a white tag attached along a seam of the wing.

Consumers should immediately stop using recalled diving equipment and return it to an authorized distributor or dealer for a free replacement of the overpressure valve spring.

INTERNATIONAL DAN DIVERS DAY 2010
January 29-30th, 2010 - Düsseldorf, Germany

DAN Europe is organising a Recreational Diving Medicine Symposium, open to all Divers interested in keeping up to date on the most recent advances regarding the safety of recreational and technical diving.

During this International DAN Divers Day National and International experts will talk about diving medicine and safety, presenting the latest advances, updates and current research. Emphasis will be made on clear, take-home messages for the divers, as well as on stressing the essential and pivotal role of DAN to foster the current, more advanced, diver-oriented and diving safety-oriented international diving research. 
The official languages of the Symposium will be English and German and simultaneous translation facilities (from English to German and from German to English) will be available during the lectures.

This event is organised in co-operation with BOOT Düsseldorf and the GTÜM (German Medical Association for Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine) and is recognised by the GTÜM as continued Education for Diving Doctors.  For this unique event we have chosen the “Messe Düsseldorf, Congress Center Süd” as in the same period the famous International BOOT show is organised at this location (23-31/01/2010).

While participation in the DAN Day is offered free of charge, participants will need to purchase a regular BOOT show entry ticket in order to gain access to the Congress Center and BOOT show. You may also visit the DAN stand at the BOOT show. We are in hall 3 - stand no. 3 A 87.

"Say 'no' to shark fin soup"

The advocacy campaign allows consumers of shark fin in China to take direct, meaningful action starting with a pledge to "Say 'no' to shark fin soup", following in Yao's footsteps. Then, we empower them to take even more action - ranging from helping brides to make important decisions at their weddings, to enabling diners to approach restaurants serving shark fin soup, to appealing to corporations to act ethically during business dinners.  We are putting it all into the hands of those who can make the biggest difference for sharks.
The site launched today in China as part of WildAid's Chinese web site in both English and Mandarin. We are in the process of integrating this into Shark Savers web site as we extend the campaign to all parts of the world.

Yao buys Shanghai Sharks and releases public message against shark fin soup

December 20, Shanghai: NBA star Yao Ming watched his first game as the new owner of the Shanghai Sharks basketball team, the team he used to play for before moving to the NBA. In the morning he released a new public service announcement and billboard campaign with international conservation group WildAid www.wildaid.org. The Cove Matanza de delfines en Japón

Hola, os envío un documental interesante y de reciente actualidad.
The Cove es el documental ganador del Premio al Mejor Documental del Festival de Sundance 2009. En él se sigue a un grupo de buceadores que intentan descubrir toda la verdad sobre la pesca ilegal de delfines en Taiji, Japón.
Lo que se encuentran es mucho peor: “un microcosmos de horror donde los crímenes ecológicos se cometen a diario”.
The Cove además desvela otra tragedia: los altos niveles de mercurio tóxico que se encuentran en la carne de estos delfines, vendida como alimento comestible.
Y lo peor de todo: la mayor parte de la población japonesa no tiene ni idea de lo que está ocurriendo. ¿Les suena?
The Cove es un documental del 2009 que muestra la matanza de más de 23.000 delfines en una cala en Taiji, Wakayama (Japón). El filme fue dirigido por el antiguo fotógrafo de National Geographic Louis Psihoyos, y fue grabado secretamente durante 2007 empleando micrófonos submarinos y cámaras de alta definición camufladas como rocas. Ganó el Premio de la Audiencia de los Estados Unidos en el Festival de Cine de Sundance anual número 25, en Park City, Estados Unidos, en enero de 2009.

A alternativa de dia 19 de Dezembro: Actividade de Natal

Como anunciado previamente tinhamos planeado uma alternativa para o "Mergulho de Natal", caso as condições meterológicas não fossem favoráveis na proximidade da data.
Assim, com ventos fortes, vagas altas tanto por cá, como Norte de Espanha, Berlengas etc, saltamos para a opção alternativa já que certamente o intuito de uma actividade nesta época é para ser acessível a todas as certificações, promovendo o convívio, e não, um mergulho totalmente as escuras como numa "maquina de lavar".
Para quem de facto marcou na sua agenda o dia 19, para além de poder fazer o treino das skills,  experimentar o equipamento recém-adquirido, também foram feitas mais experiências e aprendizagem:
- Mergulho com fato seco
- Formas de lançamento da SMB (boia de patamar); uma peça muito importante para a segurança dos mergulhadores muitas vezes "esquecida".
- Experimentar Equipamento de Mergulho Técnico: bis e decos
- Reciclagem de Mergulho

A actividade realizou-se em piscina numa cuba com 5 metros de profundidade, 28ºC de temperatura,  e no final não faltou o bolo-rei.

Uma pequena prenda,sem custos para os participantes.

Brevemente deverão estar disponíveis algumas imagens deste dia.

Transmissão de documentário sobre o "Océan"

O documentário do programa de televisão Bombordo da RTP2, da autoria do realizador João Sá Pinto, produzido com o apoio do PORTISUB e da Câmara Municipal de Portimão, tendo por base uma pesquisa histórica e texto de membros do clube, será transmitido, no Sábado, 9 de Janeiro de 2010, cerca das 20h10, no canal 2 da televisão estatal.

O navio-almirante Francês "Océan" varou intencionalmente e foi incendiado a 18 de Agosto de 1759 nas imediações da praia da Salema, durante um episódio da Guerra dos 7 Anos que envolveu as esquadras Francesa e Inglesa.

Em Julho de 2005, uma equipa do CNANS (Centro Nacional de Arqueologia Náutica e Subaquática) montou um intenerário subaquático que permite uma visita "guiada" ao local, dando assim continuidade a uma experiência pela primeira vez promovida em 1993, e que foi pioneira no contexto Atlântico Europeu.

Também da autoria do realizador João Sá Pinto, serão transmitidos 2 novos documentários que aconselhamos todos os entusiastas do mergulho a não perder:

Desde o passado sábado que as pessoas que fazem mergulho junto ao Hotel Pestana Palms se surpreendem com uma árvore de Natal 'aquática'.

A iniciativa inédita partiu da Escola 'Tubarão Madeira Mergulho'. Wally Charné, sócia-gerente da escola, diz que a ideia surgiu com as decorações natalícias da cidade do Funchal. "O Funchal já está todo decorado e então quisemos fazer algo engraçado para os nosso clientes quando vêm mergulhar".
No último sábado, um grupo de amigos e instrutores da 'Tubarão Madeira Mergulho' juntou-se para colocar a árvore no fundo do mar e decorá-la. Wally diz que não foi uma 'operação' difícil nem muito prolongada. O pinheiro foi devidamente preparado e encheram-se de água as bolas de Natal para que não flutuassem.

Para fixar a árvore no fundo, os responsáveis pela iniciativa aproveitaram uma escada de madeira que há algum tempo foi trazida pelo mau tempo para a zona. O pinheiro foi então preso com 'braçadeiras' para que aguente o máximo de tempo possível e, depois de estar bem seguro, foi decorado. A sócia-gerente da escola garante ainda que nos últimos dias a árvore mantém-se inalterada e até os peixes já se habituaram à decoração, tentando até comer as bolas que foram colocadas no pinheiro.

Se o tempo aguentar e não houver nenhum 'temporal', os responsáveis da 'Tubarão Madeira Mergulho' garantem que há condições para que a árvore permaneça no fundo do mar até o ano novo. Depois, será retirada e se estiver em bom estado, deverá ser novamente colocada no mesmo sítio em Dezembro de 2010.

Ao contrário de outros locais avidamente procurados pela comunidade de mergulho, vastamente explorados, Bonaire permanece ainda praticamente intocado, localizado no Sul das Caraíbas onde o clima árido com pouca chuva permitem que as suas águas sejam extremamente cristalinas, podendo-se mergulhar durante o ano inteiro.
É conhecido por muitos como um local de destaque para fotógrafos subaquáticos, tendo em conta as suas exigências em termos de visibilidade e qualidade de fauna e flora disponíveis para recolherem as suas imagens.

Para aqueles que não apreciam um Live-Aboard pela restrição de estarem limitados a uma embarcação durante as suas escapadelas de mergulho, aproveite agora este Drive & Dive!

• Ficará num hotel muito próximo das docas, fará mergulhos a partir de terra e de embarcação.

• Terá ao seu dispôr e incluído na viagem uma viatura para as deslocações pela ilha e para os locais de mergulho.

Comunicado para a Preservação dos Tubarões: APECE pela Shark Alliance

A Shark Alliance é uma coligação global de organizações não governamentais sem fins lucrativos que visa a preservação das espécies de tubarões (elasmobrânquios).
Recentemente foi enviado um Comunicado aos representsnte de Portugsl ns União Europeia, Eng.º Rui Rosário,  com o fim de dar a conhecer a realidade actual das populações de tubarões, nomeadamente no caso concreto de Portugal baseada em fundamentos cientííficos, por fim a que possam ser implementadas medidas efectivas de protecção.
